Drive-Thru Flu Shot Clinic

ELLINWOOD, Kan. — As flu season approaches, Ellinwood Hospital & Clinic is encouraging community members to protect themselves and those around them by getting vaccinated at its Drive-Up Flu Shot Clinic on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The drive-up clinic is open to individuals ages 3 and older and offers a quick, convenient way to receive a flu vaccine without leaving your vehicle. No appointment is necessary.
Patients will have access to multiple vaccine options, including a standard flu vaccine, a high-dose vaccine for adults ages 65 and older, and an egg-free vaccine for individuals with an egg allergy or those whose provider recommends that option.
For those who cannot attend the drive-up clinic, flu vaccines are also available at the Ellinwood Hospital & Clinic medical clinic during regular business hours.
"Getting a flu vaccine is an excellent way to protect yourself," said Dr. Chris Brown, M.D., of Ellinwood Hospital & Clinic. "The vaccine is recommended for almost everyone six months of age and older and is covered by most insurance plans at no cost to the patient."
Dr. Brown also encourages patients not to let common misconceptions keep them from getting vaccinated.
"One of the biggest myths we hear is that the flu vaccine can give you the flu," she said. "It cannot. Some people may experience mild side effects such as a runny nose or feeling run down for a day or two, but those symptoms are temporary and typically mild. We encourage everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated."
While some people turn to supplements during cold and flu season, Dr. Brown said they should not replace vaccination.
"Taking vitamins like vitamin C or elderberry won't prevent you from catching the influenza or other cold viruses," she said. "There is mixed evidence they may slightly shorten the duration of symptoms, but the benefits are minor. Vaccination remains one of the best ways to reduce your risk of getting sick."
Patients attending the Drive-Up Flu Shot Clinic are encouraged to bring their insurance card and wear clothing that allows easy access to the upper arm.
